Looks like you are using a canvas or thicker material to stitch into. Have to play with the needle sizes and the tension if you can adjust them manually. I buy larger/oversized eye ballpoint titanium coated needles and use them to stitch into just about everything, I don't switch to sharps for cloth or the blades for leather because I have never seen a real difference. I have some double oversized eye needles that I use for metallic and decorative threads, when I use these I slow my machine down to 400spm and I can put them into anything.

If you are going to stitch this out again I'd suggest getting some proper sized needles if you haven't already, loosen the tension up a good amount and slow your machine down for this thicker stuff. You'd probably see a lot better results around the circles where it gets thin for 10-20 stitches.

Software wise I've never used any of the free programs but there are some better ones that come to mind SophieSew would be one I'd try first, the page looks to have some positive reviews on its use.

For the most part it just takes practice, when I initially started a couple years ago the stuff I'd produce was pretty terrible. I'm always learning but if I set out to do a project 90% of the time now I get it right the first time and I still always do a test stitch before I cut into something valuable; that's just smart money. But also with the most cautious approaches had to get out my stitch ripper and take something out that donked up and ruined the whole design/final product. It happens.
