They get seen as kind and a lot of people often think they the celebrity is doing something for the charity. In many cases it's not only free publicity, they get paid too. Depending on how it's set up. Like if it were "Paula Deen support the fighting childhood obesity!" or whatever. Don't donate to that. You won't be donating to an actual charity. You'll be giving Paula Deen your money and she will donate what's now her money to charity. Now she can claim that on her taxes and pay less.

It's why I never donate to store drives and shit. Great. The store earns 100% of that through tax deductions.

huh? If I donate $1 with an actual legal charity. I get to claim $1 on my taxes. Where does the $.80 go?

It's so the celebrity can be all self righteous about a cause and it only costs them an afternoon. Plus the charity usually will make more money from middle and lower class people when a famous or trusted figures says they should donate. So it's a win win for both parties.

Can you be sure none do donate their salaries? It's unlikely but possible. The celebs see the giving of their 'valuabe' time as charitable and an effective way to extract larger sums from a larger number of working/middle class majority.

Tim Cook donated all his money to charity last year. That is one example but I know there are more. Bill Gate for example. A lot of celebrities donate they just don't make the news.

I see a lot of bullshit responses here, so I'm going to counter with actual experience, having been on the board of a 9 figure family-run charity.

Most charities do matching donations. They want to ensure that the charity organization has a "strong base" of everyday donors and volunteers to keep the charity going. They don't want to dump 3 million dollars on a "Homes for Haiti" iniative and then find that the charity built a few dozen homes and fell apart. They want to dump 3 million on charity and get other people to donate another 3 million and volunteer for the organization and keep it engaged, growing, and helping even more people. Also, for a lot of people charity is as much about legacy as it is about helping people. They want to ensure that their charity is a "start" to something, not just a flash-in-the-pan one-time help to people in need.

Of course there are the awful examples and the shining examples. But by-and-large, the above reason is why celebrities ask people to donate to charity.

A lot of celebrities do. It just doesn't make the news. "Millionaire mark Wahlberg donates $50,000 to water.org" is a headline and that's about it. It just doesn't make much of a story. If it was a news article it would generate next to no clicks compared to a story like "Justin Bieber drives drunk, get arrested".

  1. Fraud.
  2. They don't wanna waste their own money.
  3. It goes to their own charity ex: Al Waleed bin Talal, donated his 32 billion dollar fortune to charity which is apparently his own.
  4. Ranking up in social hierarchy.

It cost nothing for the TV time.

The value is in the celebrity bringing attention to the charity in question.

Also. Many people do little things does matter.

And. As others have said, we have no way of knowing how much they give.

Spreads awareness. Why give away 1,000,000 when 100,000 can give away 10 each.
