The merchant boat is a single ship, raided by multiple, smaller pirate ships.

The containers are filled with comatose indentured servants that have sold their freedom for various reasons. The players are unaware that they are basically aiding the slave trade. The merchants, however, are bound to their contract to never let anyone know what is in the containers (if they try to figure out themselves, they suffer damage from the contract, and knowingly letting someone else figure it out causes extremely annoying winces of pain).

The players are bound to go to the continent the ship is heading towards to complete mercenary-type duties. The merchants are bound to transport this cargo and to never let the contents be revealed except to the recipient. Trying to find out will get the players kicked off, which will hurt the players, since they need to be on the ship to get to the continent.

Should the pirates steal it, the merchants would probably order the players to kill the pirates or steal the cargo back, while demanding that the players do not open the cargo or get booted off of the ship. I was planning on having the pirates demand some of the cargo ( the pirates and the merchant captain are all minotaurs) as part of an agreement, where the captain orders the players to kill all of the pirates, despite being outnumbered (the contract kind of forces him to protect the cargo).

And then Kraken. At least, that's the idea.
