A nice place for nice people to share and discuss ideas, topics, articles, questions, interests and whatnot. We want discussions which are nuanced, so please try not to treat issues as black-and-white. You're also welcome to discuss submission and activities elsewhere on Voat here. You might also enjoy: /v/seriousdiscussion
Rules:
Any discussion forum consists of its users, so please try to embody the philosophy of this sub in your comments: /v/discuss is intended to be nice, open, accepting, non-judgemental, grown-up and bloody lovely. Therefore:
- Be nice
- Don't be rude
- Don't retaliate
- Don't downvote posts you disagree with; that would be antithetical to discussion
Guidelines for submissions:
-
Start your post with "Discuss:". In the title of your post, ask a question, pose an opinion, set a topic, or, if sharing a link, describe it in the title. For clarity, you can start your post with "IMO" if you're stating an opinion to be debated.
-
When discussing your own topic, do so in the comments as opposed to the body of your submission. The reasons for this are: 1) to prevent the submitter's thoughts from being the most visible and "important", and 2) to prevent top-level comments from being responses to the submitter's points.
-
If you want to start a discussion that's already taken place, you're more than welcome to do so. However, if you want to submit something which is already on the first page of /v/discuss, just take part in that discussion instead.
-
Use the body of your submission, not the title, to direct the flow of discussion if you wish (e.g., asking for serious replies only, listing certain different points you think should be discussed, etc.). You may want to give some prompts or ask some questions if your topic is broad.
-
Use the body of your submission to post a link or links you wish to talk about
Guidelines for discussions:
-
Try to present your opinion in a humble way; remember that everybody else probably considers their opinion to be as true as you consider yours.
-
Try to disagree in a humble way; don't presume to be more intelligent than those you disagree with.
-
When disagreeing, don't focus your response on the person you're disagreeing with. Instead, focus your response on their argument.
-
Not every post has to be a debate, and general commenting is welcome. However, try to make a substantial contribution to the discussion.
