When a user posts a news story, or interesting link, and you downvoat that submission because you don't agree with the article or item, you're downvoating that user, not the article.
If you click on a submission (a link), because it piques your interest, you should upvoat that submission, because the voat user took their time to find and item and then by posting it here, they've brought you an item of interest for you to review.
You're feeding the system as it should be fed.
You should not be displaying your disagreement with the article or item by downvoating the OP. That's not what the Up/Down Voat is for. You should show your disagreement with the linked item via a response to the OP's post.
I have posted several news items lately, showing Left bias on display, only to have these submissions downvoated in greater numbers than upvoats.
Of course you don't agree with the linked article! Neither do I. But by downvoating me, simply because I've brought you the item for your review, you've punished me, and the item then goes down in the ranking where fewer will see it, and frankly, you're making OPs feel like contributing to Voat is a waste of time, as the OP's sure not getting anything for their effort but downvoats.
Upvoat what you've shown interest in viewing, no matter if you like what you see or what is written in the linked item (News Story, Photo, etc).
Downvoat me when I submit something I've personally written - Like, For Example, This Submission (cue the downvoats).
