My opinion is clearly stated in this:

if it makes sense from a stolyline point of view and doesn't change any already established characters/events or the books themselves

and this (from yet another post):

Maybe he is part of a storyline that has him as a "defector" or some shit. Maybe his dad raped last time he was in town.

I don't like all that pandering bs going on with the Female GhostBusters, Black Annie or any other such "re-imagining" but this is not black Aragon that we're talking about here. It's an addition to an already vast and diverse lore that can very easily account for such complexity; if the writer wants to go down that path.
