Hi! Welcome to the sub! And congrats on the new baby! I found this page full of crochet patterns for newborn/infant hats.

It sounds like your issue is with the decrease. Maybe you're starting the decrease at the wrong stitch. I think the best way would be to read a pattern and make sure you have mastered each step in the pattern and be more focused on the decreases. I've only knit beanies (rather than crochet) but the same thing would happen to me; my hat turned out like an elf cone hat.

wait, the stitch that i add the second loop into (I'm doing hdc, and after the single stitch and then the double, i hope you know what im talking about)
