Googling the standard range for communication towers. I found information saying that the maximum range for a cell phone is 31 miles from a tower. Generally speaking, the 10 to 20 miles part seems to check out.
I do think that's describing theoretical maximum. Sort of like how walkie-talkies say they have a 20 mile range, but you have to be standing with a clear line of sight with no reflections or weather disturbance - like on top of two mountain peaks or over open water. In the real world, most consumer walkie-talkies end up having a practical range of a mile or two. Try googling "walkie talkie range".
BUT I could be totally wrong about this. It's just based on my casual understanding of transmitters and antennas and such. Thanks for the fact check. :)
