I think it is inevitable when a site becomes mainstream. If someone offers you millions for your hobby project you'll probably take it.
We can see through the evolution of Reddit the importance in controlling content which reaches the mass audience. I don't think a site can go mainstream, and be heavily reported on, if it doesn't represent the status-quo.

Here is the thing though, not everyone will take those millions. Two examples that I know are craigslist and GoPro.
