the "think about the children" argument is an emotional appeal. you see, all humans care about children, it is ingrained into us as a survival mechanism. but almost always this appeal is to get you to stop thinking, and to start feeling. trying to feel for an answer is stupid, and will give you the wrong answer. your gut is wrong about complicated topics. often real solutions are counter-intuitive and complex.
i have learned a long time ago that the second a politician says "think about the children" to stop, and take a hard look at what they are proposing. almost always it is a loss of liberties, security, or welfare for the citizens or people concerned. when i think about the children, i imagine they will grow up and be adults, and most of their lives will be lived as adults. so when i think about children, i know of very high importance is preserving their liberty for the rest of their lives, rather than giving them a few years of easier lives to be payed for for the next 5 decades.
