You’re right, the data is even less compelling. It compares the search term’s popularity to itself. It shows “interest” on a scale from 0 to 100. It registers as <1 every year until 2020 and registers as 100 in 2020. So it doesn’t even mean it was in the bottom 1% of searches in previous years, it just means it’s over 100x more searched this year. Obviously.

All your link shows is that Covid was in the bottom 1% of searches prior to 2020 and is in the top 1% in 2020.
