My plebeian knowledge of it is summed up in this:

The continual expansion and civil wars kept killing off a lot of native romans, and integrated subjects. That didn't help.

But the real killer was the big 3 of:

* Inflation

* Mass immigration of outsiders (that largely didn't integrate)

* Huge state welfare spending (due to loss of jobs for romans to slaves)

Now whose tactics does that sound like?

It makes sense as collateral cause, but the main reason is always a conspiracy from inside to overthrow the aborigine's government.
