It explains the turn towards isolation from society, the development of psychiatric problems, and the lashing out against society. It happens to smart people usually when they are bullied and picked on.
This was blatantly done by expert psychologists as well. And it was proven later that the head of the program was working for the CIA... Ted was MKUltra'd. Straight up.
Great bio on Ted is the Netflix movie Manhunt: Unibomber. After viewing that I read some of his "crazed" writing and discovered much of it makes total sense.
His financial aid was dependent on his participation. So, yeah, I suppose you're technically right. He could have walked away from "free Harvard" at 18. I'm sure no one would have criticized that decision if he wound up doing all the same stuff.

I think his sentence needs to be reevaluated.

I'm not saying he didn't commit atrocities. But it's difficult to deny some of his brilliant writings:

this is what pushed him over the edge, done on purpose because he fit their profile. 99% of the assholes in DC belong in a guillotine.

Maybe the white-guilty are the result of those 3 years Ted endured spread out more subtly in self-hate inspiring media and academia?

Does not say anything about being forced to be apart of the study. So he subjected himself to the abuse, along with the other people in the class.

Guess how old he was...
Now the question I have is, who provided the scholarship to "Lawful".
