Its not a very good game, really. You can't battle pokemon you're attempting to catch, you only battle pokemon that hold the same stats as what the trainer has at a gym, which you may need to pump $5 or $10 into it to beat a given gym. The pokemon is simply rendered ontop of a picture taken by your phones camera.
Just like a quad core processor or any multicore processor, the hardware isn't fully utilized to even be viably branded augmented reality. They have virtual headset hardware, sure, but they still cannot fully utilize the capability of an i7 processor let alone render a good 30+ frames per second 3d image through two seperate small high resolution OLED screens.
