Here's the Lancet report on India's 1998 heat wave for comparison ...

India's heat wave and rains result in massive death toll

One of the worst heat waves in India for 50 years has resulted in the deaths of more than 2600 people in the past 10 weeks. Unofficial reports have put the number of dead at almost double that. In Orissa—one of India's poorest states—the temperature rose to a scorching 49·5°C that killed nearly 1300 people. Bihar, Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Gujrat states have also suffered, with temperatures soaring to 45–49·8°C.
