Haha I'm sure Dali had a lot to do with why it was so beyond its time as well.
That's a good question. I'm not entirely sure, but I thought it was only America that really followed the code until it was replaced with the mpaa like 30 years later. I'm pretty sure controversial foreign films and directors played a part in the code needing to be replaced as well. The only restrictions I'm aware of in French film was pretty harsh anti-porn laws that weren't abolished until 1975. If you find out for sure, let me know, I'd definitely be interested to know for sure.
