For my own part, I find that water's three states form a sound analogy, and with some specification this analogy avoids heretical modalism. At a precise temperature and pressure, water can and does exist in all three states simultaneously. Under these conditions liquid water boils and freezes at the same time, allowing even an (admittedly loose) analogy to the Son and Ghost respectively begotten and proceeding from the Father. Naturally no analogy is perfect in all ways, though water at its triple point is the best which I have yet contemplated.

Another good analogy which I have found involves light.
