I would think chicken wire is fine for the roof during the day for you, as long as you lock them up somewhere safer at night. If you're really nervous though, consider a single wire electric perimeter around your coop and run. Relatively inexpensive and definitely safe.

I'm in the woods in a rural residential area. We have a dozen or so raccoons, possums, foxes, etc that frequent or live on our property. During the day, our chickens range in a large mobile paddock - I used chicken wire for the walls and roof, electric wire perimeter, and have had no issues leaving them unattended outside for 12+ hours.

I hate chicken wire, it is too weak and floppy, just a pain to deal with. I usually go for the 2x4 welded for the sides and would do the same a roof cover.

I prefer the 1/2in hardware cloth to chicken wire, but corrugated plastic is good if you need shade
