That would be a good point if this were a site about discussion.

'The beginning of the end' is a meaningless phrase when Reddit has been filled with inane subs for almost a decade. It would be easy to make the argument that subs like r/aww are major contributors to Reddit's ongoing success.

I don't think the decline in traffic is indicative of shifting attitudes about cute animal pictures or other 'garbage' content. I agree that success isn't just about raw traffic numbers - Reddit remains hugely influential online and isn't likely to be replaced by a more serious-minded site.

More users may not be what Voat desires, but is it what Voat needs? Sites stagnate and die when they stop attracting new users. I hope that Atko is able to make the site sustainable in the long-term, and I don't see how he could do that if he ever decided to pass down an edict that frivolous content was banned site-wide (or whatever the OP is expecting out of a discussion-only site).

I completely disagree. Why else is so much thought and consideration given to how to facilitate fair and honest discussion. Upvotes, downvotes, bans, etc.

Call it what you will but this sites like this begin and end on the discussions brought about by the media aggregated.

There's no reason why /v/fairandhonestdiscussion can't exist alongside /v/cutestcatIsawoutsidetoday (both subs available, FTR)

The whole point of splitting content into user-created subs is so that many types of content can exist on the same network. Rather than banning certain types of content you don't want to see on the site, why not propose features or systems that would let you easily source content you enjoy? Like starting a meta-sub to share subs that focus on deep discussions, or introducing something like the multireddit feature.

You can just don't subscribe to such subs. Email forwards are not so easy to get rid. And this is not a site about discussion. If it was the case, we would not have the option to submit links, just start discussions. And it would be boring as fuck. I want to read discussion and see cat pictures. I don't think this will kill voat. The ridiculous free of speech KKK versus SJWs circlejerk would be immensely more efficient.

And this is not a site about discussion

I want to read discussion and see cat pictures. I don't think this will kill voat.

I believe it will because it brings users who simply want to gawk at inane pictures and those people far outweigh those who are here to contribute in meaningful ways.

The ridiculous free of speech KKK versus SJWs circlejerk would be immensely more efficient.

Nah, free speech brings disucssion. Which I believe sites like Voat, Reddit, Slashdot, Fark, Old Dig, Hacker News and so many others are truly about.

For your first point, it's because discussion is an option. My point is that we can have both.

For your second point, so what? Subscribe to subs with your kind of people and let the cat people do their thing.

For your third point, free of speech is certainly a good thing. And so is social justice. I consider an immense waste of time and energy when half a dozen dots above the curve start arguing with half a dozen dots below the curve, picking tiny little details as if they were the most important thing in the universe, while hundreds of dots inside the curve don't really see why they're arguing. But you know what? They can keep doing it. Just as cat people can keep posting their cats. Enjoy your discussions, ignore what you dislike, that's my view of it.

It's not about importance, it's about quality of contribution and discussion. If we aren't willing to talk about distinctions why did any of us come here from any other site.

It's useless, it's frivolous

There is a use. It's relaxing. Discussion can be stressful. It's easy to get worked up in an online argument with some who simply will not see sense (at least according to you). Being able to take a quick break to look at cats being cute within the same site keeps users coming back. Maybe some people will come only for the cats, but they won't go anywhere else so they don't do any harm. In the meantime, the cats help maintain the community of discussers.

I wouldn't subscribe to a sub like aww either, but I disagree with the content being "garbage". Sometimes looking at a cute photo can be just what someone needs to lift their mood. Their is nothing wrong with having such sites on Voat.

Memes can be a problem when they start displacing serious discussion within a sub. When this occurs, it is due to bad moderation; moderators surrendering to populism. The solution is for moderators to set rules on what kind of content is and is not on topic. When moderators delete this content when it is submitted, it doesn't overtake the sub.

Don't agree but it annoys me that people use the downvoat to disagree.

Actually, truthfully, I do agree. I just don't want to accept that content.

You don't need mindless numbers to generate revenue. Donations or paid subs could suffice.
