Open discussion is awesome, but I wouldn't call it a open discussion if half of it is calling the other side "stupid goy" and "shill" and "sheeple" and downvoting into oblivion. Certain groups feel extremely strong around here while more moderate opinions are buried in the noise.

You shouldn't mind the ad hominem rhetoric you get. You won the argument by then and can only wait for another user to give his opinion about the subject.

I like open discussion, but I also like it when things like "Syrians rape!" are downvoted.

Show the racists how their views are irrational, unwarranted, and wrong.

Are you unable to demonstrate the irrationality of their views?

Entirely untrue. I'm a full fucking liberal humanist in the most extreme sense, but I enjoy a lot about Voat. Some people are racist, but even when that's the direct case, you're completely up for arguing. Argue away. I say this as someone who fucking love... ed... Reddit. A site with voting, liberalism, etc., but it was corrupted by the fascism of extreme liberalism. So I've come to appreciate the openness of Voat. There are racists and every variation of discrimination over here, but there's also a likelihood that you'll be respected for your variation of opinion. I've gotten too used to being downvoted on Reddit for certain opinions, that I'd lost the appreciation for certain types of freedom. I think that freedom exists over here a bit more. Not always, but in this new state, it's definitely prevalent. So essentially, racism is a factor that exists openly on Voat, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's credible. It just means it happens to be popular.

Everytime I try to get into ANY discussion about the situation here in Germany I get a gazillion downvotes and 50 different people call whatever I said stupid and uninformed and call me a stupid goy and a sheeple and tell me to educate myself before the inevitable demise of my home country. There's the occasional upvote but either they're all fed up with trying to have an intelligent discussion or they're scared of being downvoted for saying something those groups don't like.

It seems impossible to be open about not hating Syrians.

Perhaps your view of Syrian migrants is not supported by facts, so you get frustrated when your pet project is downvoted?

This is one of the few places that won't shut them up. I hate it and I'm getting fed up with Voat in general, but I have no idea what to do about it.

Sorry, can't change your view.

I think the issue here is that, and I will use /v/news as an example, many of the comments are on the level of "why would you ever let brown people in to your country?" or "this is what you get with 'multiculutarlism' and all the other lies the leftists will try and shove down your throat". It doesn't really provide any basis for any discussion.

I would agree with you that the best way forward is to show them how the view is unwarranted, but I also understand the lack of motivation from OP when you see many comments like that.

How often does "proving that someone's views are irrational" on the internet actually change people's posting habits?

People rarely change their views. I don't think people with racist views - despite being bombarded by "racism is bad, m'kay?" in our culture - are more likely to do so.

Hey, I see you violated rule 1 of the comment rules. I will let this up as the thread would need to get more traction, but please, if you can't refute the arguments of OP please do not spam the thread. Vent your frustration on /v/whatever or something similar. Thanks.

No.

You're so used to be sheltered from these speeches in everyday life because they are censored that it shocks you to see it often in here, because of actual free speech.

It's like the people not used to seeing black people, and at some point, they start to see 2 per days and they react like " my god this town is full of niggers!"

Hey, you have broken rule nr. 1 from the comment rules. I will let this up as the sub would need traction, but please, don't spam the subs with responses like this or I'll start a zero-tolerance policy.

"Racist" is a word used to shut down conversation.

Voat doesn't shut down discourse.

Uh huh. What I always find comforting about people like you is how bad your grammar and sentence structure is. Just to reaffirm your stupidity.

I just want to play devil's advocate with every comment in this thread, but I just don't have the time or motivation to actually do it.

I'm certain Voat has a higher proportion of racists than a lot of places, because of the huge exodus from Reddit. So you're not completely wrong.

On the other hand, you probably shouldn't generalize from that portion of the community to the entire community. You're not the only one tired of all the racist BS that comes out here, but the truth is I'd rather have to put up with people who have shitty opinions than an admin team that demands everybody have the same opinions they do.

No, I don't spend all my time arguing with these people, but as a gay atheist, I think I can claim the right to check out of the arguing scene - I've had my fair share already.
