Because it's easy to say "OMG TEH GUN!" especially if it's a model that is easily vilified. People still wring their hands over the scary Bushmaster used at Sandy Hook, but disregard the designed to be 100% legal under the Clinton era "assault weapons" ban used at Columbine. It's harder to say "Our mental health system is broken, the way we view people reaching a crisis point is broken, our society is broken in that it permits people to reach a crisis point." It might be a bit easier to lay your hands on guns here, but a truly determined nutter who breaks in the unique way people seem to break in America can lay their hands on all manner of evil scary if they wish to do harm. They might have to work a little harder on a bomb or something.
