I think it's a bad idea because "whenever there's reddit drama" is really subjective. There's always fucking reddit drama. Some of the drama stories are just more popular than others. People are coming to voat.co all the time, sometimes in "waves", sometimes not. There will always be legitimate new users in times of drama, as well as times of non-drama. And there will always be fuckhead new users in times of drama, as well as in times of non-drama. Plus, a lot of shills/sabotuers have found a way around this already. Many of them have created voat accounts already, so that whenever they feel they need to come in and try to fuck-up voat, their account is already-made, even if they haven't been active on that account.

Reddit drama is what fuels the voat furnace with new victims.

You are absolutely right, I wouldn't have been able to create this account. I would have continued to lurk, I have been lurking for a good long while. I actually like lurking, even if I had an account my natural inclination is to just passively read and not actively participate. I finally signed up because over the last few weeks I've seen more shit posting than I'd like. I figure I should participate or accept that the average post quality will decrease. I think if I continue lurking this site will be less pleasant to lurk on and I will be the poorer for it.

If you look at my meager history you will not I am no literary luminary. Some of these new posters are, but a good many are not. I think I'd be better off if they weren't around, even if that meant I kept lurking.

The single biggest similar site to Voat is Reddit. Voat was literally only created by Atko after he learned that r/technology was banning any posts with the word "Tesla" in them, and it only got a large enough audience to fully self-sustain the regulars here around the time that r/FatPeopleHate got banned (give or take about a month or so).

Voat is basically the free-market competition to Reddit when Reddit decided to abandon their "bastion of free speech" moniker. If Redditors couldn't flee to Voat, they'd be forced to either go to the Chans or stay there in Reddit, and not everyone is redpilled enough to last long in the Chans.

Voat would have been abandoned long ago due to a lack of subscribers if it hadn't openly welcomed the occasional burst of Reddit refugees. They might not all decide to stick around, but the few that do in each burst tend to learn the culture pretty fast.

That's a great assessment. Voat us crucial. You are right: Voat is in between reddit and the chains. Perfectly in between.
