That is why we don't use Bing here in China; they censor the shit out of everything. Baidu has less fucking censorship then Bing, it is absolutely ridiculous.

Legit question: Are many people aware of the censorship going on, or do they genuinely believe that the Chinese government is censoring the internet for their own "safety"?

Chinese people are generally aware that it is happening, but they don't think it is happening to the extent we Westerners think it is. But, you know the US government censors the internet, as well, so no nation is immune from this.
The older generations think that is for the safety of society and that younger generations should be censored from such things. The younger generations think it is all BS and the smart ones use a VPN. Some people, like my wife, just don't care because they aren't looking at anything deemed "bad", and they recognize the level of control the CPC has and feel defeated by its' abundant power.
Plus, the government appeases the people to an extent by allowing file sharing websites to exist en masse so people can consume all of the media they can get their hands on; this also includes media that is normally censored by the government.
