I honestly don't see it being an issue here. Not one that isn't covered by existing laws.

I work in Northern Alberta, in about as redneck of a town as it gets. We had a transgendered chick come out this spring. We were told very explicitly that any harassment would result in dismissal. There have been absolutely no issues. No one really cares.

There'll be assholes in any crowd but usually the masses slap the asshole down. Half of the bar fights I've been in were because I stepped in to defend some gay dude. Don't get me wrong, I'm an asshole too, I just direct it at other assholes who bother other people. I feel Alberta really embodies that saying "I may disagree with what you say but I will fight to the death to defend your right to say it".
