Yes. I have stood up for people before and will do it again. People assaultIng others and commiting crimes, in that moment, think there will be no repercussions for doing so. If someone were to walk around with a full grow pet tiger, nobody would mess with them. Obviously we can't do that in civilized society. As civil as we may choose to be, there are those who live among us who don't respect civility, rules, or laws. When they attack, they are acting impulsively and not rationally. The only thing that is going to stop them in this state is a change to their current emotional state. Physical pain and/or fear are the quickest ways to do that. Since their parents failed to teach them why it is bad to break laws against people and property, I will take it upon myself to teach them a lesson, that hopefully lasts and serves as a constant reminder for them.
When YOU are assaulted by someone, you will wish that someone like me comes around.

Sorry mate, I don't need a superhero. If I am ever assaulted I'm quite able to look after myself - that's one less worry for you.
Yes, there are those among us who do not follow the rules. Defending ourselves against them is reasonable, extracting revenge and/or justice is something we have given into the care of the justice system, and failure to allow that to happen leads to the worst kind of anarchy where the line between the bad guys and the rest of us becomes increasingly blurred. Mad Max was a great movie, but I'm not interested in living it.
