Far be it from me to argue that self-defence is not an ancient right, but in this case we're not talking about self-defence.
To my mind it's completely understandable that Tews would have chased the guy who threatened his mother -- many among us would do the same -- but Tews screwed himself when he decided to go get a weapon and dispense justice.
The prosecution will argue that the threat was removed as soon as the second would be car jacker left, and they will be correct. There is a difference between self-defence and dispensing justice.

It sounds like you have never lived in the hood. If they walk away today they will come back when they think you are sleeping.

One of them was on the ground, the police would have got the other.
Do we want to live in a society where vigilante justice is acceptable?

The threat was not removed. The second thug could easily have decided to take revenge at some time when the woman's husband and son weren't around to defend her. Or even returned with a gun or some gang members.
Frankly, the family might be well advised to move somewhere else now.
I can't see a jury convicting this guy.

Who the heck is making these laws, and who is prosecuting them?
