You should have just asked the home owner of you could park on their property.

Thanks for the interest in my story. I tried to be vague and yet descriptive, not sure how well I fared.

I'll clarify a few things. When I say that the parking spot is "directly" next to two homes, in mean in the rural sense that it's within the sight line of their backyards, which are about 30-40 feet above the road and maybe 200 meters back. (Sorry for the mixed units, I used to run track and anything under a mile I use meters). They were having a BBQ and lots of people were up there, but no one down by the road. Lots there all have long driveways with gates.

Also, I stopped the car further up the road at the second sign saying the road was out and walked up to the first guy I saw. I asked him about the road and trail, but admittedly was vague about my intentions, just mentioned "going down for some swimming".

Camping there has always been a clandestine affair for me. I would hike the near ridge to see where and how far my smoke was going and made sure it burned hot and clean. I always had a water bucket handy, as well as 12-pack of empties filled with river water.

In all the time I've been there, I've never had or caused a problem, until this last time. I'll consider your advice if/when I do go back.

I can understand wanting to remain under the radar, it's too bad your spot changed. I have a few spots I can't go to anymore. Happy Trails to you!

Maybe they thought you part of their party and got worried?

I liked tourney story and think it’s a shame you got the jitters. I would definitely go back and say thank you and ask about the area. Who knows they might even let you park properly.

I grew up small town and some people are dicks about their property. My father lives next a MaCoy Hatfield duo and the one guy comes out of his with a shot gun. Lol. But others are really friendly and as long as leave the area clean they don’t care. My father just like hunting on his property because he’s always doing something outside and doesn’t want stray bullets coming at him. But camping, he’d be cool; won’t sell his land though!

Maybe the people on that area just don’t camp there because it’s back water area and living is already camping!

This is 100% correct. You'd be amazed what folks will let you do if you just talk to them. Being perceived as some urban jackass will lead to "search parties", and they ain't looking to rescue you. @ChanceofRain seems cool, sad that it had to end this way.

He does seem cool and a probably a good camper too.

But yeah, talking to people helps and also keys you into the good stuff especially if you promise to kee the secrets!

Great story and thanks for sharing!

It is a bit odd that there was a search party that night.
