I have some land. Have some coworkers who I have taken/gone shooting with a few times. Two of them came and shot out at my land, helped set up a small range, and said they'd love to come help on it any time and go shooting. Since land is expensive and I don't get to use it as often as I want to, and I have no local friends with which to do such things, I invited them camping. Neither of them had any gear, so it was like camping with cub scouts. I had to bring everything from home. And all the guns.
Upon arrival, one of them got his sports car stuck in the field, and then unstuck. They opened their brand new flashlights, marveled at spider eyes glimmering in the dark. Explored the abandoned old house. And then it came time to head to camp. Which is 350 yards up hill through the woods with no trail. So we loaded up a big Gorilla cart with half of their gear, I put on my ruck with all of my gear, and up we went. It probably took 45 minutes. Cart overturned several times dumping beer and sleeping bags everywhere. Had to make 2 trips. On the second trip, something spilled. Gas/oil mix for the chainsaw. And an entire jar of pickle juice. They were exhausted. I noted at the top that we had my 1-man-1-woman tent, my 4-man tent, and another borrowed 5-man taj-mahal tent. Blankets. Sleeping bags. Tons of alcohol.
They immediately set up chairs at the fire. Got a fire going. It was quite dark at this point. I started setting up my tent and debated warning them.... and then decided it would be kind... "Guys, I know you want to get shit faced and relax, but you have tents you've never set up before... you should probably do that before you're drunk, tired, and cold at 4am." That was an entertaining sight...
Turns out I forgot to bring MY chair, amongst all of the packing for them. Grrr.
We talked, we drank Jack Daniels and traded beers. I had ground up some venison that morning with about 40% really good bacon, we ate burgers out of the cast iron pan. It was fantastic.
Ended up not being as cold as expected. They got to hear coyotes. Drank delicious spring water (filtered). Stayed up until 3am. Reluctantly decided this was a very "friends" thing to do and maybe I had to consider them friends...
No one wanted to shoot or do anything the next morning, they were too hungover, almost too much for eggs and bacon. Realized one of them had brought a 24 pack of Coke Zero up the mountain, and only drank 2 of them. Awesome. Ate at Taco Bell on the way back into town. Dr. Pepper was good, man.
