Fondant, lets face it – hardly anyone likes it and many run screaming from it like a bad guy in a horror movie 😉 Over the years it really has gotten a bad rap. Generally it is the first thing peeled off a slice of cake and pushed to the side of the plate, like the red headed step child of dessert components.
What you may not know is there are many different types of fondant, too many to list – believe it or not! You will most commonly find in Walmart and craft stores the ever present Wilton fondant at $13 for a 24oz box all the way up to $65 plus $24 shipping for a 15.4lb tub of Carma Massa. It can get pretty pricey depending on what your cake artist prefers to work with – which all factors in to the final price of your cake.
With everything, there is good and bad. Fondant is not excluded from this. There is good and bad in flavor/texture/pliability. To get around these problems, many people make their own fondant – I do!
There are many different fondant recipes on the internet. What may be good for one person may not be good for another. In the end it will all come down to trial and error to find what is perfect for you.
The great thing about homemade fondant is that it can be FLAVORED!! Mind blown huh!?! No more boring sugary flavor peeled off to the side and left to waste away in your garbage can!
One very creative wizardess of the cake world Kara Andretta, has been delving into the wondrous world of flavored fondant and experimenting with different flavors that I can not wait to try!!
The first of her experiments is Vanilla Bean Bourbon fondant and the second is a natural flavored Strawberry fondant – no artificial flavors here! With her new flavors I am insprired to try my hand at creating my own and oh the possibilities are endless.
Go forth and try your hand at making homemade fondant or if you are feeling daring but not too adventurous, ask your cake artist for a new flavor for your next order!!
