I see a lot of the smaller bowls have finally learned that they NEED to get regional teams in order to make it worthwhile for the community. It is hard to get fans to fly 1/2 way across the country with 2 weeks notice. so teams and bowls are looking for games within driving distance of the fanbase. Look at Tech's recent bowls. Heart of Dallas, New Orleans Bowl, Armed Forces Bowl (in Ft Worth). all of these are driveable for most of our fanbase, and that helped increase the size of the crowds.

it wasn't that long ago that the bowls were strictly tied to pecking orders in conferences which lead to tons of empty stadiums. ESPN didn't care. the bowls didn't care (the schools were forced to buy thousands of unused tickets, effectively negating their payout from the bowl games). the SCHOOLS and the HOST CITIES, however...they DID care. it is much better now that the smaller bowls are reaching for regional pairings rather than a strict MAC #3 vs SEC #9 or something.

Every one of the Dec 17 games has at least 1 team that should be able to bring a sizeable crowd. Lots of the other "smaller" bowls dia great job with their pairings too.

I'm happy with Tech's bowl. Easy road trip. Worthwhile opponent. Should be fun.
