Q: If you wanted to mountain bike away from a forest fire (CA) could you do it wearing a safety mask or gas mask?

This is a hypothetical question. Everyone saw terrific traffic jams of people trying to escape the fierce California wildfires.
Example video of traffic jam - a bike could beat these cars - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cmS5pVEZHzg

In the short video you can see the advantage of a bike. It could even be lifted over the lane divider to go in the opposite direction ... something cars cannot do. And a bike can pass a traffic jam by going around them all.
But the air is terrible. Can a person exert themselves wearing a paper mask or a gas mask? Has anyone tried?
