You never read much about cycling shoes for flat pedals. Flat pedals don't get respect in the cycling world. It's all about shoes for clipless pedals, and the choice is road clipless shoes or mountain bike clipless shoes. But I ride platform pedals -- mountain bike platforms, actually, with studs to keep my feet from slipping. I needed a shoe that didn't have laces, because the laces on my sneakers kept coming untied or flopping over my chain rings.
I found them the other day at WalMart. Sixteen dollars for a pair of sneakers with Velcro straps instead of laces. They are ideal for cycling on flat pedals. As a bonus, these sneakers have thick soles and give my feet some support when hanging over the edge of the pedals. I couldn't be happier. They are ideal for my needs, and only cost sixteen dollars! A pair of cycling shoes from a bike shop would probably have run me over a hundred dollars, even if I could have found shoes made for platform pedals -- and I probably wouldn't have found them there.
