Wrath is “the just punishment of an offense or crime” (Webster’s 1828 Dictionary).
Wrath is known as anger or violence. It is also about justice. The cross of Christ, and the sacrifice the Father made for us, is the supreme example of both. The cross was a violent act. Nothing about it was tame or easy. But it wasn’t pointed at us. It happened for us.
There is nothing just about the cross, if you frame it in terms of what we deserve. We did not deserve the substitution Jesus made, putting Himself in place of sin. But the cross gave us grace, so that we may have a chance at salvation.
Yes, God is a wrathful God. And we would not want it any other way.
For God has not destined us for wrath, but for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep, we will live together with Him. Therefore encourage one another and build up one another, just as you also are doing.
