19 Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. 20 Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin. (Romans 3:19-20 KJV)
Most Christians don’t realize it, but the Old Testament Law was not given to the Gentiles, but was only given to the Jews. It was given to God’s chosen people to show them what was required to be holy in His eyes. It was never given to provide Salvation, as mankind was, and is, unable to keep all the Law, so we can not save ourselves by our actions (Romans 3:23). This was necessary to show us that we needed a Savior, as we are unable to save ourselves through our actions, therefore we are all guilty in the sight of God (Romans 3:10). Does this mean we should ignore the Law? God forbid, as the Law tells us how God would like us to live our lives. The commandments of Jesus (Matthew 22:37-40) supersede the Law given by God through Moses.
The Law was given to make sin come alive (Romans 7:8), as sin was already rampant in the world, but man did not realize how sinful they were, so God gave the Law to show us just how far from being holy we were. Christians have embraced and taught the Law as what we need to do to be right with God, but that was not, and is not, the purpose of the Law, as no one can be justified by keeping the Law. Why churches still try to preach the Law as being necessary to be right with God, I do not understand, as that is contrary to the Gospel of Jesus Christ, as Jesus paid it all. We are saved by Faith in the Grace (Ephesians 2:8) brought to us by Jesus, and not by anything we can do ourselves, it is all a gift from God. All we have to do is believe in Jesus and obey Him (Hebrews 5:9). The Law still tells us how we should be living, not to get anything from God, but because we have been born again, and have Jesus living inside us. We should live holy because of our love for Jesus, and not because of the Law. Praise God for His Grace!
