6 Therefore we are always confident, knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord: 7 (For we walk by faith, not by sight:) 8 We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord. (2 Corinthians 5:6-8 KJV)
Even though the Lord lives within the believer (Galatians 4:6), we have to perceive Him by our faith. We cannot actually see Him and fellowship with Him in the same way as we will when we are out of this world into the spiritual world where He will be manifested to us. That is what Paul means by saying we walk by faith, not by sight, as we have to have the faith that the Lord indwells us as we can not see Him with our human sight. Faith is what lets us see and hear with our hearts (Matthew 13:15). And faith is what you must have to be able to please God (Hebrews 11:6).
Notice that Paul says, “We are confident”, which is including all believers. All of us should be looking forward to the day we die and leave this human body, and go to be with the Lord. We should be “confident” that this will happen when we die, as stated here and elsewhere (Philippians 1:23). The people that teach a “soul sleep” when we die, are not correct, as Paul makes it clear that we go directly to be with the Lord when we die. Thank you Jesus for our salvation.
