16 Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace; to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all, 17 (As it is written, I have made thee a father of many nations,) before him whom he believed, even God, who quickeneth the dead, and calleth those things which be not as though they were. (Romans 4:16-17 KJV)
This is saying that by faith in the grace of God, we can receive the promises given to Abraham, who is the father of us all who by faith accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior. Abraham was the father of faith, and had absolute faith in God, and believed without question, all that God promised to him (Genesis 15:6). Because of Abraham’s faith, he obeyed God and God blessed him for his obedience (Genesis 26:5), demonstrating that the fruit of faith is obedience. Not only those that were under the law, which were the Jews, but also to all the Gentiles, would the promises given to Abraham be given, so we, who accept Jesus, have the blessings of Abraham given to us. Thank you Lord for all your promises.
The promise that Abraham would be the father of many nations shows that he would be the father of faith to us Gentiles as well as the Jews (Genesis 26:4). The fact that God calls those things which are not, as if they were, is a fabulous truth, as God knows what lies ahead, and can speak things into being (Genesis 1). God has the unique ability to say that things are so, when they have not appeared yet. That is faith, and faith is what pleases God (Hebrews 11:6). Faith comes by hearing the Word of God, and believing it (Romans 10:17). You can not be saved without having the faith for it, as you have to say it with your mouth and believe it in your heart (faith), for salvation to be yours (Romans 10:9-10). Study the Word, and build up your faith so that you can move mountains with the words of your mouth (Matthew 17:20). Praise God for giving us His power.
