Just remember that this is likely to impact any access to unmetered content (like ABC iView, Netflix etc.) that your ISP currently provides you.

Though there seem to be plenty of software DNS switchers available to make it quick and easy to change your DNS as needed.

I've actually been using this DNS pathway for a while now, because the Brisbane internet was so shit. Sped it up... worth forgoing unmetered content.

Do you know if this gets around the meta data thing, or do I still need my VPN for that?

You'll still want a VPN to block meta data collection. Depending on your needs, you might like to choose a VPN provider that is not based in one of the 5 eyes countries.
