The director Alex Garland says the movie takes place "5 minutes from now" by that he says he means that if Google or Apple came out tomorrow and said they created and AI we would all be surprised but honestly not that surprised. I really thought the way he put that was brilliant. To be honest AI is a very frightening thing for me and this movie dos such a good job with it on a small scale

AI is both frightening and intriguing to me, personally.
There are numerous advantages to AI such as having more elaborate AI assistants like Iron Man's Jarvis computer. They can aslo be frightening if they ever become truly intelligent and self aware at the same time. The movies Ex Machina, A.I, Terminator and iRobot are good examples of both the good and the bad of self aware AI.
The Matrix is a good example of the worst case scenario where there is almost no AI willing to help the human race.

Don't forget 2001: A Space Odyssey. But yea AI would be an amazing achievement but I see no reason to not believe in the possibility of an uprising. These movies show it very well
