I'd say Clinton was his biggest asset.

There's no way Trump could've gotten elected if he wasn't running for Clinton. I'm pretty sure it would've swung the other way if it weren't for the email leaks too. We all knew Clinton was a criminal, but that was a fresh batch of evidence to remind everyone that she's the figurehead of a large and powerful criminal organization.

..what's the opposing view?

Otherwise it isn't really an argument.

Name recognition is necessary, but not sufficient- Nixon was more well known than JFK, and almost every other candidate was better known than Carter.

His platform was the asset.

It certainly played a part in this but not always toward his benefit. Name recognition also means people had already formed their opinions of him prior to the race. Because of his past association in business, TV shows and his first presidential election bid the public at large decided what kind of presidential candidate he would be. I think his greatest asset was his sincerity and down to earth speaking at his many rallies that changed people's opinions of him. He himself is his greatest asset because he used everything he is to overcome what amounted to nearly impossible odds against him to win the highest office. His name recognition is now his political brand just as it was his business brand. I believe he will be the most memorable president because of this.

Undoubtedly it was his biggest asset. The moment he entered the race, even though he was polling 4th or 5th, he was getting the most coverage of any candidate, by far, based completely on his name recognition.
