Don't go to East Colfax.

i just must to comment, mr. baiter,...east colfax is fucking HUGE and super diverse with a deep history in the denver psyche...east high school is on e. colfax, alma mater of don cheadle, (he's a black guy) and many, many other successful, smart people of all shades and doctrines...shopping in thrift stores and antique shops, great food (see above) and great cultural and art stuff, colfax is the heart and soul of denver, (and aurora) and deserves more respect...branding ALL of east colfax a "no-go zone" is like saying "all mexicans are rapists."
honestly, mr. baiter, i'm saddened and offended by your apparent close-mindedness...open your eyes and take a real good look....east colfax is America at it's best, (and worst). good luck.

Check the Denver Westword. It's a local magazine (online too) that has all kinds of information on shows. Stay away from 5 points. Broadway from 5th to a little past 1st is a nice area as well as 16th Street. Lots of bums though. It's supposed to be windy this week too so dress accordingly.

"little man's" ice cream is always a big hit. great stuff. huge lines. inexpensive and delicious homemade flavored ice cream. depending on the age and what they're into i might be able to give some other recommendations.

Lived in the area for decades. Denver is not known for violence. I've never felt threatened anywhere. Her instincts should be all she needs.

sad, just sad...denver has a great multi-cultural community. east colfax has so much great food from mexican and salvadoran to vietnamese, french, italian, greek and many others....five points has amazing bbq ribs, rotiss chicken and stick-to-your-ribs southern food (oh the collard greens and cornbread, heaven..)...ALL over america there are sketchy places that you wouldn't go to alone and denver is no different and it seems to me the general demographic of VOAT wants to steer you away from the ethnic parts of town and, yes, there is plenty to do for lily-white shoppers who get their kicks buying the same crap in the same stores all over the country and eating in the samesame chain restaurants that litter the nation and i would highly recommend a tour of some of the areas great diverse neighborhoods. sure you may feel out of place sometimes and the folks you meet might not look like you and that is the america your daughter needs to see not the corporate happyhappy of one more fuking TGIFridays....check out westwords' best of denver section and go try some of the great ethnic restaurants the locals enjoy...denver is an open and welcoming town, open your mind and the city will open for you.
yeah you should use some common sense..i.e...don't stand on an E. Colfax street corner with your daughter at two in the morning, don't wander around upper downtown late on a friday night...etc.etc. but do explore a great city outside the corporate bubble, there is so much vitality, creativity and great, inexpensive food....i could go on at length...dimsum on w. alameda, best tamales in a greasy brown bag in downtown, one of the best sushi restaurants in the us on s. pearl st (super expensive), great pho on s. havana & Mississippi, a steakhouse easteasteast 6th ave that serves an amazing dry aged steak bigger than your head.
in short, old fart, there is only one single area in the greater denver conurbation that you shouldn't go...and that is the wealthy southern suburbs, it looks like everywhere else....unless that is the america you want her to believe in.

denver is an amazing and very culturally diverse city that has some of the best food in the country. its my favorite city for food, hands down. there is an incredible pulse to the city. my favorite vietnamese restaurant is there (new saigon? been a while), my favorite deli (heidi's deli), best asian fusion samplers (zengo..xo edamame mmm), and my favorite ice cream shop (little mans), plus countless other restaurants throughout the city, those are just examples off the top of my head. i would say it's probably my favorite city in the nation. ...that being said...i would never throw someone into the ringer without having the slightest bit of background on them. I biked that entire city every day between school, work, and parties for 4 years straight and have been all over. i lived downtown, i lived in englewood, i lived off MLK, and cap hill. i've lived in sketch neighborhoods and in really nice neighborhoods...but in that time i've learned where not to go and what to avoid. this question seemed to be asking for general advice for what is likely a weekend trip. in which, they likely won't get to be as immersive in their exploration as denver deserves. i don't think people are trying to discourage experiencing denver, ppl are likely just hesitant to throw a likely young girl into potentially dangerous situations and areas if they don't have a shred of common sense.

Ben's Chili Bowl in Wash dc used to be in a great black neighborhood on U street, after the riots it was in a shit area for 30 years, now it's in a loverly gentrified cityscape...they never moved...look at Daddy Bruce, or Pete's Satire or el Chupultapec, you still wouldn't leave your teenage daughter at any of these places at night...and if yer hangin out with Dad during the day you need to see this part of america before it disappears..
btw...who said "young girl"? and how did you read sooo much into one short question? likely shmikely.
