Interestingly, in census data people most likely to choose 'American' as their ethnicity are those found in the Border and Middle South where people of British Protestant stock descended from colonial settlers predominate. Whites in other areas often identify as Italian, German, Irish, etc., and are of immigrant stock that arrived within the last 160 years or so.

That actually is completely unrelated to what I said but it's not even accurate. Those of English descent were about 47% of the population in 1775. Add those of British descent generally and it was much higher. Germans were a small minority centered mostly in Pennsylvania.
There is reason to question whether those of German descent are tops even today but again it is unrelated to what I said.

No, the largest demographic in the US at independence through to this day is German. English is third.
