If the opinion has an effect on the work then that is completely understandable. Also, if the person is unduely vocal about the opinion and is causing a disturbance because of it, it is understandable. But holding a private opinion and being penalized because of it is messed up, though I would argue that it is also an unfortunate part of being a primate. We are social animals and social dynamics play a part in work as much as everything else in our lives. If you don't 'fit in', and don't hide it, expect to be persecuted for it...

Would you say it's okay if your opinion has no effect on your work and even though you are quiet about it at home, you are vocal about it outside of work and you are fired because of that.
