Probably an oversimplification/misunderstanding on my part, but: Employment-at-will. They can fire you at any time just like you can quit at any time, unless you have a contract that says otherwise. I sucks to get fired for something like an unpopular opinion, but if they cannot prove wrongdoing on your part (at least in the US) you'll probably qualify for benefits while you look for another job. If I were fired due to an unpopular opinion, I'd see it as a blessing. I don't want to work in an environment like that.

Yeah, I only really know about unemployment law in the US, specifically IL, NE, OR, NY, CO. Or at least I used to :P

You would think you'd be grateful but if you happen to love your job even if its a shifty environment then it truly does suck. I've been there, I did not handle the experience well and now it seems as though I am blacklisted from my industry. The best possible thing to do is to just let it go and move on. I feel for ya, it's a horrible position to find yourself in.
