I have to say that we went through a similar reasoning ("he must be smart if he was able to build such a big empire" and also "well, he is already very rich, he doesn't need to steal any more money") and we got Berlusconi elected here in Italy where he ruled for several years.

Unfortunately, it turns out, all what motivates these kind of persons is self-interest, even when they pretend to talk about the community and for the good of said community their real hidden objectives are to gain more money and more power. They are always power hungry and seek always more and more power (and money), even when they are at the top of the food-chain.

Soon they begin to think that law does not affect them, that laws are for everyone else, and they surround themselves of complicit persons placed in key, powerful, positions to protect themselves from any possible consequence of their acts.

Beside this, they soon begin to surround themselves with the worst kind of extremists, giving them more and more power and publicity to their ideas, until they affect your own rights and freedom, just because extremists would do pretty much anything to gain power and recognition in the society, even close both their eyes while you, their savior, do whatever you prefer. This kind of scum takes decades to get purged out from the civil society once this happens (or a serious revolution, which is unlikely to happen today anyways).

If this is not enough, your country soon becomes a world-wide joke, losing credibility among your own alliances and becoming a reason if smiles and laughs that are certainly not nice to watch.

You are free to try it yourself, if so you believe, but i wouldn't go down that path again if the choice was mine.

You just described Trump. As a NYer, I've seen what Trump has done locally since the 80s. He was a big bully to Mayor Koch and threw his weight around the city long before he gained national notoriety. I cannot think of one charity or cause that he was involved with in my lifetime. He did build the Wollman ice skating rink "for free", but that was just a project to embarrass Mayor Koch at the time whom he had fierce battles with trying to get his real estate development projects approved with ludicrous tax breaks. I guarantee you Trump didn't lose one penny from building that rink and somehow is still getting paid handsomely from that "free rink".

The only reason I support Trump is because I despise every single GOP and Democratic candidate. I can't even say I'm voting for Trump because he's the lesser of 2 evils, because honestly, he is very evil. ;) This seems to be the only rational explanation I am voting for Trump. :)

I appreciate your post. When Trump announced his candidacy I initially thought of Berlusconi as a good comparison. Trump doesn't strike as the type to have bunga bunga parties though. Also, correct me if I'm wrong but Berlusconi is way more wealthy/powerful than Trump.

This. If he gets the nomination, he gets the presidency.

There's a trend that's been true for many, many elections since the 80's. During a presidential election, whichever political nominee sells the most rubber masks of their own face before halloween, wins the november election.

This is correlation, not causation, but I damn well know that Trump will sell a LOT of rubber masks of his face, who doesn't want a trump mask?

Oh, yes. This again. If there's one little play the liberal media loves to run with, it's that all republicans are dumb. Ever since the dan quayle drive by it's been a staple. If it came out that trump were certified top 2% of mensa they'd just come up with some bullshit about being smart-dumb or so smart he is dumb. What ever it takes. Gotta delegit anyone with an R to keep your quasi-intellectual snobs from listening to a word he says. Beside...we had a super smart constitutional law professor. Didn't stop him from shitting all over the constitution.

Yeah but Donald Trump actually is dumb. Dumber than a box of rocks. It won't stop me from voting for him, but lets not pretend that he's some brilliant individual.

Well, this makes me curious... why would you vote for someone as dumb as a box of rocks?

How do you think this will affect your life and freedom (please do remember that Trump is pro-censorship and pro-dismantling of the Internet as we know it today, pro-anti-encryption laws, against whistle-blowers that uncover the evil your own government is doing against its own citizens, etc) and how do you think other countries will see this move (you americans voting for a person as dumb as a box of rocks) if Trump ever gets elected?

Yes they do. These are the same people who used to mock him before he launched his campaign, because mocking Trump used to be a bipartisan activity. He has long been the laughing stock of America.

But ever since he came out as a racist, xenophobic, nationalist, people who identify with those ideologies now believe that he's brilliant and super smart. His four bankruptcies used to be object of ridicule and contempt, now they're seen by these people as a virtue, symbol of his wisdom.

He has become the leader of the pack. They constantly refer to him as "Alpha Male." It doesn't help that his support base consists mostly of non-college educated people. And racism/prejudice have been correlated with low IQ. It's no wonder then that they would consider a climate change denier, birther, anti-vaxxer to be some sort of super genius.

What is so racist? He doesn't want us to become overrun like Europe? With uninvited illegals? Or bankrupt like Greece? Suddenly defending your borders is racist? Is nationalism is bad too? It is now xenophobic? If he were xenophobic he wouldn't be married to Melania. These words are being flung around so freely these days, by ignorant people who don't know what they mean. He also had a very famous series on TV, is that a laughing stock? BTW, I would rather not vote for him, but I've seen tactics like yours smear better candidates and it is bullshit.

Suddenly defending your borders is racist?

The way he's proposing to do it is. Ban Muslims? How's that supposed to even work work?

Immigration officer: "Are you a Muslim?", Muslim terrorist: "No."

Now what? Administer a bacon test? ISIS has already given their members clear instructions to break Islamic laws to further their cause, so that's out. Bible test? Nothing a bit of memorisation can't pass.

If he were suggesting banning people from certain middle eastern countries that would at least make practical sense (and it's been done plenty of times in the past), but it seems that middle eastern Christians being blocked would be unacceptable to the right, so instead of you have a plan that would prevent many elected British and European politicians who are Muslim from coming to the US while doing virtually nothing to stop terrorism.

It's exactly the kind of unworkable populist fearmongering nonsense that fascist leaders used to great effect last century.

lol, god forbid we have a president who thinks many Muslims are violent, and some Mexicans are rapists

Or even worse, one that is nationalistic. If I didn't know any better I'd say that's an adjective people use for good presidents

This has to be a covert endorsement of Trump. Is there anybody on this site who actually dislikes the man?
