So, for those of you who do not know, Ouja boards work by a well known group-think style mechanism.

People always expect an outcome from things. Put them all holding a thing on a board, and then ask them a question, and there is going to be one obvious answer. If not, the first few selected letters will make there be one.

The "movement" comes through small twitches in your hands, and small unconscious movements. You are encouraged to "move along with the flow" so if you feel a small movement, you will exaggerate that and push it the way you think it should go.

For example. There have been experiments where you get people at an ouja board, and blindfold them. Then turn the board upside-down. The people at the board will move the little icon thing to the same positions they think the yes/no/letters are, but those icons are not actually there.

Ouja boards are solidly bullshit, and I hope you get that reference.

They can be better than bullshit though. If used correctly, the "automatic" communication can allow some insight into unconcious processes. Works better on the young or young at heart as they tend to be both more creatively gullible and less aware of their inner motivations.

Pretty comprehensively superstition then, I didn't really believe in it anyway but it'd be cool if it really was ghosts or whatever.

Why would ghosts, if they exist, communicate through such a stupid method? Surely there would be an easier method.

We have a lot of abandoned houses in rural Wisconsin and I remember one night we took our board to one of the houses that was deemed our area's cult house, it looked not unlike the house in the first Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Big, spooky, old farmhouse with lots of vandalism and poetry on the walls and brought some candles for added effect. We contacted someone named "Ruben" although I suggested it was saying "Beets" because Rüben is also the German word for Beets and we have lots of German History around Wisconsin so who knows. A German Ghost? Maybe... Anyways, then we got scared, smoked some weed, drank some beers and then we drove to this creepy girls house we went to school with and put the Quija board in her mailbox. (They had one of those big ass farm mailboxes.)

Haha sounds like a pretty cool night! Actually funnily enough my friends broke into an abandoned parochial house (where Catholic priests live, this is in Ireland) and had a pretty creepy adventure. There was still furniture and stuff in there and there was one room with nothing but a chair in the middle of the room and a spot-lamp pointed at it. You can imagine the speculation that we've put into what might have happened in that room. Anyway long story short they found a key and went back to drink in there a couple of times until one of the lads said that he thought it was bad karma and threw the key into the river. I think the council have knocked it down now.

Thanks! I guess if you ever wanted a quiet place to sit and read or play a portable like a 3DS or PSP that would have been the place.. ;-) And Thank you for posting this, it reminded me that growing up in the hinterlands of Wisconsin wasn't all that bad.

I had a board that i owned. I used it at my house with expectedly no response and started messing with my friends. However, I then brought it to another friend who lived in 'haunted' territory. I was in a room with big windows, and as soon as i touched the board it looked like the forest was on fire. It was a very bright orange, almost daytime. I stopped touching the board and it went away. I left the board at my friends house, don't know what happened to it and don't care.

Believe if you want or not, it's not like i can prove this.

I'll take you at your word man, that sounds pretty creepy. What if your friend got possessed though, you were setting him/her up for a horror movie scenario by leaving that there!

That's not really unplausable, if you believe what i say. There's one more event that you may be interested in when I was at this house. Again, I can hardly believe this happened myself, but idc about voats, i'm just talking because i like the voat community.

Anyway, i had left my friends house and was driving down the road. I was doing around 40mph when my passenger started screaming and pointing to the side of the road. When i looked, i saw what looks like a coyote, but pure white, which really long ears and really big hind legs. It looked like a mix between a wolf and a rabbit. It was also running next to my car, keeping up with me. Imagine a lion chasing down a gazelle right before it pounces, that's kind of what it felt like. After my friend screams my natural instinct is to break, and when i did so the 'thing' ran into the forest.

I dont know if i can believe my friend when he said that another group of people, unrelated to me, reported the same creature. Still one of the creepiest things that happened in my life, next to my pool water disappearing.

It would be amazing if it was all an elaborate prank.

I almost wish that were true, as that would be more comforting than not knowing what happened =/

Haha so spooky you did it two more times! :P One of my friends claimed to have contacted a dead aunt but refused to talk about it, makes me wonder if there's something to it. I've never done it myself.

Not really. All you do is ask yourself a question and answer it... I don't see the appeal at all.

I would not play with an Ouija board because I do not see any value in the novelty of it. But the artistic and intellectual conversations that go behind it are rather interesting. I see it as art and not something spooky. A friend of mine had one for display above his fireplace like it was a piece of art. I think things of the occult should considered as such.

Yeah some of that occult stuff is pretty cool to look at, if I had more expendable income I could see myself getting into it just to spruce up my place a bit!

hahaha yes, everybody tried to move the table at the same time, and then nobody, and then that became the game, to see who was able to do it while all the laughing going on

Yeah I've a feeling that my friends and I would keep fucking it up on purpose to try and spook each other out! My user name may be mr skeltal but IRL I get spooked out easily, probably because I'm perpetually stoned to varying degrees!

Ha-ha. My sister believes Ouija boards have magical, evil powers. The game for fucksakes is made by a large, mainstream corporation. It's cardboard with some words on it. It can't do anything. If anything happens it is purely coincidental, or someone is intentionally trying to fuck with you.
