People on phones with bad accuracy, forgetful peeps and just plain mean folks. Personally I upvoat everyone who responds to my comments, submits to my subs or responds to my submissions. Sometimes I forget though..

Anyone who responds in a polite and informative manner should be upvoated.

Trying to upvoat on mobile is horrendous. Click... No... Click... No... Click, click, click... Yes... No... Nothing... Fuck it.

I'm with you. Reminds me of Windows. Press it once, it doesn't work. Press it again, it works twice. Weak..

I do the same thing, in an attempt to encourage more responses/posts. Even if I don't totally agree with you, if I feel like you've contributed to the discussion in some way, I will probably give you an upvote. The only time I don't give an upvote is if the response/post is hateful. Occasionally I'll give a downvote to extra hateful assholes. Out of the 715 times I've voted, only 8 are downvotes.

Even though I'm well over the 100 CCP minimum I still subscribe to the idea that an upvoat only goes to truly worthy posts and comments.

That probably plays into it. People who don't want to contribute to get to 100 just don't and either lurk or go away to elsewhere.

I see where you're coming from and for me, I encourage participation by responding to comments. I like the dialog here because many people have radically different views than myself and there's a good expectation of backing up claims which helps me learn more and see from other people's viewpoints

The number of subscribers does not mean much here, on Reddit or anywhere else. People come and go. But the important thing is that posts reach the front-page with few votes.

But I see a several hundred people active on some subs? Still seems like theres something unaccounted for.

I have the impression that people don't upvote, generally speaking. I try to upvote any reply I get, but I often forget to upvote comments that I just read in a thread. So, I'm kinda part of the problem. With posts, I'm selective both to upvote and downvote. If most users are like me, votes will be scarce. I'll remember to upvote more.

Well, one thing I know is that slow, organic growth is superior to quick and heavily promoted, because in the former people adapt to the way of discourse and culture of the place instead of imposing different means.

So I don't mind so much that voat is kind of a ghost town, I remember when reddit wasn't so big and you wouldn't expect a lot of replies in small subs; unless it just dies in the end, that'd be annoying.

Because a subscriber is someone who clicked on the subscribe button once. That is the only prerequisite. They might never look at that sub again, they might never even log in again. That's not including the fact that they'd have to be logged in at the right time to place a vote anyway. Thousands of subscribers doesn't mean much.

I think you might be underestimating the Lurker to Upvoater ratio, OP. On Reddit, a successful post could see maybe 3000 upvotes. That seems like a lot, until you realize there's 3,000,000 total people viewing the post. On a site this size, a good 30 registered upvoaters is pretty good. Not shitting on Voat, just saying it's a smaller site and people who actually upvoat will always be a TINY fraction of total users.

A lot of people probably created accounts a few months back when voat was getting buzz and reddit was undergoing some major internal upheaval. But you realize pretty quickly that voat doesn't have much to offer for regular users unless you're really passionate about far right politics.
