I think it's safer to grow gradually. A growth spurt can drastically change the culture here to the point where it's really not the voat that we've grown to love. Growing gradually encourages newcomers to adapt to the the environment rather than take it over.

This is what happened right after reddit went dark during the Victoria/IAMA fiasco. /v/all was full of gifs and memes for a good week, and we had baby weaklings advocating reddit-like strong moderation during the Shedrama.

We worked hard on getting rid of the redditards and we're better off now. It's best to grow organically.

Any ideas on how voat can grow organically, because it seems to be very slowly trending downwards?

I don't disagree with you, however I wonder if people who value censorship and moderation and safe spaces would naturally quit voat under their own volition, given they are fucktarded-cucking-faggots :-)?

Any ideas on how we can help grow Voat gradually? I ask because the trend seems to be very slowly declining or at least leveling off.

Keep sharing information you find valuable. Tell you're friends that like these types of forums and encourage them to do the same. That's basically it. The value of the content and loyalty of the communities will build Voat over time.

I just recommend voat to my friends and mention how heavily censored reddit is.

Hi, I'm kind of an outsider here. I switch between this site and that other site, but I thought that I might have some input because of my habits. Today I opened up voat after maybe a week hiatus and the first article I'm greeted by on the front page is from /news. Now bear with me.

That's fine that /news is on my front page and all that jazz but the first article is actually a horribly written anti-Semitic piece about a bomb maker? I think? I couldn't even figure it out because the article seems like it was written by a 12 year old hateful child who's teddy just was supposedly stolen by some evil man wearing a Yamaka (sp?). I would love voat to be more popular but at the same time the Internet has give a voice to all our shittiest, worst, hatefilled humans as well as our best and brightest.

In my opinion, for voat to become more popular some of the practices that make voat so liberal and free would have to be curbed in order make the level of quality of content to a higher place. I'm not saying lets censor any dissenting opinions to the mods or anything that made that other place what it is, but it would be quite nice if I wouldn't be forced to see an article that has been gamed to the front page, that has awful hateful writing in it, and a comments section that reminds me of a bot circlejerk.

We should post more neutral content. It's very political and while that is absolutely not a bad thing, a consistent greater variety would be helpful.

This.
When I open voat, I should not need to go anywhere else to find news.

As long as it remains a haven of racism and other far-right nutbaggery, nothing.

What is wrong with racism if it's based on rational and informed reason?

Discussion that opposes your views should be shut down immediately. The people involved should be doxed, shadowbanned and have their lives ruined. I agree. Thank you oh wise liberal for your insight.

Do we need more people? Reddit was decent once upon a time, you know.

I think we could stand to use some more people because even on popular subverses such as /v/news, most posts seem to be contributed only by a handful of people and it only took a few weeks to become somewhat familiar with the "regulars". I think it would insulate voat greatly if it had some more users.

If we want to grow we need to more accurately advertise the benefits of this kind of forum so that more demographics will migrate to make use of it for their own respective agendas. V/ seems like small circles and while it is nice to see the other side so often it would be nice to engage folks in dialog who are some shade of gray and not simply averse to every position I could offer. I am not saying the sample size needs to grow only that I am from a red state with a lot of libertarian/tea party folks and I would rather use my time getting opinions/sides I have not heard to the point of redundancy. This may just make me a selfish prick.

The question was "How can we improve voat's popularity?", not "Can we improve voat's popularity?".

The world is racist. The fact that black people commit half of the violent crimes in the US despite being 10% of the US population and no one is allowed to talk about it, and the fact they still paint themselves as victims and whites evil doesnt seem racist to you?

Stop trying to be Reddit.

When people come here from Reddit and see all the same subs only with 3 day reposts from Reddit instead, it doesn't give anyone a reason to stay. It's "3 days old Reddit" with a lot less content, a much smaller user base and a hyper-right-wing agenda on the front page. Other than Reddit pissing someone off and them actively looking for an alt, there's no reason to come here. It sucks but it's true. Here's what I think we can do to help turn it around:

Make NEW subs, not just copies of subreddits.

Post OC.

Post good, relevant articles only - don't spam 60+ per day in a sub you're a mod of just because it's related.

Don't link to paywall/surveywall/timed-ad articles.

Don't pretend opinion pieces are news in your title.

Downvoat racism and name calling if it doesn't contribute anything thoughtful.

Don't say cuck: it wasn't even a good insult the first time around since they were admittedly into it anyways. It's like calling your gay friend a homo. Also every time I see it used on this site it makes no sense other than as an ad homonym.

Be as objective as you can.

It is okay to not comment on a post.

IMO we need to start doing a lot more of these things before we even consider trying to brand ourselves outside Voat. This place is kind of a horrorshow and I've been here since around the Pao shindig. To most outside users this place would seem beyond toxic right now.

Downvoat racism and name calling if it doesn't contribute anything thoughtful.

That smells like censorship to me (specifically the racism bit).

No, I don't think people should be down-voted just for having opinions that you disagree with because we aren't here to make you happy.

Additionally, there is nothing wrong with racism if it's based on rational and informed reason because very few cultural ideologies are perfect and many cultural ideologies deserve to be heavily criticized due to their culture of human rights atrocities...

Don't say cuck:

How about this: people should express themselves freely and you can do the same?

Downvoating isn't censorship. It's how we all do a small part in controlling the content. Censorship is when an authority can unilaterally shut down statements. The upvoat/downvoat system keeps things more democratic.

Are you asking for ideas on how to get people to actually come, or on how to make sure they don't? Because what's been going down on Voat is the latter. Look at your own graphs if you don't believe me.

We would first need our admins to monetize the site so growth actually matters to them

[–] guy231 0 points 2 points (+2|-0) ago

hell, so growth doesn't cause them financial hardship. It's not clear that growing the userbase wouldn't just get the site shut down faster.

That's a good point too. People seem to forget that Voat is not currently sustainable.
