I like the fact that they support free speech, that members can create subverses on day one of registration, and the relatively small feel of the place.

I lurked for a few weeks before registering, and the overall community doesn't seem to care about upvoats, which is another plus for me...

but I've only been a member for about three hours, though...

I agree. when people don't really care about upvoats, you get more legitimate material and discussion. the larger subs on reddit are filled with people who try too hard to be clever and funny to get upvotes, and it kills any potential for real discussion. the fact that you have to tag your threads as [serious] to avoid those kind of people on askreddit speaks volumes.

I wouldn't know... I was banned from AskReddit :/

Upvoats only really matter until 100, after that you have all you need from what I can tell. I totally agree with you though!

But you have to behave though. If not, we could take back the upvoats we gave you and get your counter below 100 again ;)

note: that actually works

Hi, I'm new, what happens when you reach 100 upvoats?

Erp, disregard, I read further down. So you can only downvoat after receiving 100 upvoats. I like that.

This place is great, I like that it's small and am okay with watching it get big.

You hit the nail on the head. Cordial thoughtful discussion is such a breathe of fresh air.

Completely agree. Not having to sift through meme after meme for quality content is what I'm all about.

And all those terrible pun threads. My god they were bad

Yet I have already seen some really juvenile insults thrown at people they don't agree with. I don't care if those people are right or not, that is simply not good conduct and won't foster a good atmosphere nor good discussion.

I like that they're implementing features reddit admins have procrastinated on or flat out refused to implement for years. Reddit's code is such a mess that no serious improvements can ever be made. It's also cool to have RES-esque features native in the site.

I just joined and have been opening picutres/gifs directly on the page. It took me a couple times to realize that I didn't have RES and that this was just a feature of the website.

I just found voat and have been looking around and until I read your comment I didn't realize that I had been doing the same. There a still a few features of RES that would be cool to have, but I either haven't found them yet or they haven't been implemented yet.

Yea, blows my mind when I browse reddit naked and without all my extensions.

Can you expand, what are the features you are talking about?

[–] 65851 0 points 3 points (+3|-0) ago

I might be missing some but :

  • you can watch videos and images without having to click out of the site.

  • (?|?) the upvote/downvote feature which reddit blocked is enabled here by default, Used to require RES.

  • can preview the text description of threads.

Afaik Name tagging is coming.

In addition to what /u/sirinon already said, it just feels like the creators of voat are listening to all the feedback users are giving. Since reddit is basically a patchwork hack job of code that was developed over time, voat has the advantage in that we all know what reddit's weaknesses are and can convey to the creators the features that reddit lacks.

The reason I see thus far... Aside from a few communities, the majority of people seem to be separated from an ideology and more into intelligent discussion.

It's been surprisingly easy to keep this environment with a small amount of people. I think the democratic format helps for that. Most people are willing to have a reasoned discussion. But when you put them in a populated space like reddit...suddenly they're surrounded by so many people who disagree with them, they can't help but get a little reactionary.

When you've got a group of individuals, they can communicate with words and generally be civil. When it's a group of communities who subscribe to individual ideologies, the communication is reduced to speaking out of bias, emotional reactions, using words that mean different things to different people, etc. Because every conversation they're having is an extension of an older conversation, usually one that already pissed them off. Makes for bitter, oversimplified comments.

Is there anyway to prevent this from happening, without controlling the number of members?

+1 for small tight-knit subverses.

Also I love how people will have an actual discussion in threads. It's not just an up/down voat circlejerk on who can be the most clever.

I've had more good discussions on voat in the last week than I've had on reddit in years.

I guess this is a good place to plug /v/seriousdiscussion if you like serious discussions :)

Also, the fact that people even try to compare voat to reddit (in any way!) always blows my mind and humbles me. To me personally, voat is a teeny tiny ant standing in the shadow of a giant :)

It's a teeny tiny ant, yes. It does do a lot of the same things reddit does though (on the surface). So I can see the comparison.

Key difference though: The community is friendly, posts things I want to read, and happily chats. Without drama or mud slinging (so far).

That's all I want out of a social media site. Voat delivers that.

I think one of the reasons people like it so much is because of the familiarity. I felt at home here because of the aesthetics right away, but the user experience is much cleaner and the user base is just the icing on the cake.

Right?!? Even the places I hid on reddit, where I could get intelligent discussion, have gotten militant with their beliefs. Far too much Far Left and Far Right ideologues and not enough people wanting to discuss rather than call names with those asking questions or expressing differing viewpoints.

Exactly! It's like everyone decided they are lawful good, and anyone who opposes their thoughts must be chaotic evil.

And god forbid you don't conform exactly in all particulars to what group A thinks. Dare to defy the plank by having a different opinion on a particular subject and suddenly you're the enemy. A firing squad is too good for you!

I love that I can write a comment 5 hours after a top thread appears and still be heard.

And no one is refreshing their page every 5 seconds waiting to be the first to comment. Everyone can take their time.

The free speech and the layout. Reddit had a terrible layout and it looked like it was slapped together in 5 minutes. Voat is in alpha and still looks orders of magnitude better than Reddit. The community here is also much nicer and more discussion oriented.

The website is a lot prettier and easy on the eyes. I also like that there are fewer people here, so posts are seen, and there are some small communities here.
