People are too fat and lazy to civil war in the USA. We'll just vote (or not vote) our way into 1984.

People, on average, have a far to high quality of life. Even if you people don't like their governments, if they currently have a good life, they tend to not want to risk a civil war.

I think A Brave New World and 1984 are both correct. The former will lead to the latter, and most won't even see it. Shit, the transition has already begun!

I'm really hoping that we can clean it out with words instead of bullets. When I was younger I wanted the system to fail so we could start over. As I get older I realize that if we were to have a civil war life as we know it would be over for quite some time. There would be casualties from the war and even more from people not being able to take care of themselves since the current system is set up to teach people to lean on it. The best course of action right now is for everyone to make a stand in 2016 and hopefully vote in the next JFK. Sure, he/she will probably get assassinated, but at least it will open everyone's eyes.

At this point I honestly don't know. Everyone has their own agenda and we will have to judge them when the time comes.

If there is a civil war many will die. Unfortunately most civil wars are not fought with flowers and honest discourse.

Voting doesn't do a goddamn thing, you're just old enough that you've got your warm bed and don't give a shit anymore.

I would agree with you that voting is pointless. He who controls the voting booths controls the election.

It's not the warm bed that makes me not give a shit. The fact that the majority of the sheep walking around couldn't care less what happens on a grander scale than their tiny little monkey sphere is what makes me not give a shit. The fact that those same sheep will watch the news and believe everything that is fed to them makes me not give a shit. The reality that, even if I spent every waking moment being angry and posting shit online about ways to fix this broken machine, it wouldn't make a bit of difference because we've already lost.

Until people wake up to the lies there's no hope of anything getting better. Doesn't matter if I went the way of Kaczynski, Dorner, Snowden, or fucking John Connor, we've lost until we decide to fight.

I agree with you on the voting part, but it's also in the "elite's" best interest to keep things fairly civil in the Western World. It's what currently gives them any power. Is it possible? I would imagine it would take a pretty big unimaginable event to spark a real civil war. As long as most people aren't starving, have a decent job/place to live and are under the illusion that they have some power...and of course material wealth, things are gonna stay the same. Why go to war? Bitching on the internet is a lot easier!

Bureaucracy, taxes and all kinds of petty laws are destroying people's lives. Isn't that enough? How about civil disobedience?

I'm right there with you, but it's gotta be a big enough disturbance that it pushes the middle to take action. Taxes and bureaucracy are just annoying to most people, not something that is destroying their lives. Civil disobedience/protesting is a method that many groups have used to no effect.

The Tea Party takes to the streets>the left wing media labels them racists and backwoods rednecks who hate women>the middle laughs at the funny people

Occupy Wallstreet takes to the streets>the right media labels them entitled nut jobs who are just looking for a hand out>the middle laughs at the funny people

With screaming 24 hour media networks that can control the narrative, there's no way for these "fringe" groups to get any traction. It would have to be something so big that the narrative was impossible to manipulate.

To initiate Civil War in any area, all one needs to do is identify a manipulable reality for the area and threaten it. In 1860 the reality was to use slavery as the basis for economy. War started when that reality was endangered. Today, American's reality is a constant abundance of food. There are many Westerners that participate in the so-called "fat acceptance" movement because even the notion that not constantly eating is an unimaginable reality for them. Challenge that by making food a scarcity and Civil War II will start.

In Western Europe, there will be war, but it won't be citizens against citizens, it will be citizens against invaders and usurpers.

Possible, yes. But it just seems unlikely. Most people are just too apathetic to really stand up for their own interests. Easier to just slap a bandaid on the problem and pretend everything's will fix itself.

For a while things seemed to be heading in that direction here in Quebec, as discontent with the PLQ government grew with each day. Then, once they were quietly voted out, it was hailed as a victory, even as the new government did very little to reverse the policies that the people were protesting again.

Not even two years later, the PLQ are voted back in with a majority and waste no time in continuing their neo-liberal agenda, exactly where they left off. People are generally unhappy with this, but do very little to show it.

Quebec politics is fucked up.

Short answer is yes it is possible. But the concept of freedom must be better understood.
