Interesting. Could you motivate? Is it because you don't see the privacy invasion as an issue, or is it because you value the comfort of the known over the issue, or some other reason?

P.S. Linux fans: please don't bother mentioning how there are some-thousands of games available for PC. That's just a number that means jack-shit to me since it does not include even half of my Steam library (and I know what games I play are for Linux by using this tool).

Ehehehe. As a Linux fan, I wouldn't have bugged you about it, but let me tell you that I appreciate the fact that you keep yourself informed.

Will consider switching to SteamOS or some other Linux distribution (+ Steam) if/when your games will gain Linux support?

Parrot Security OS is what I'm going to try next.

My main desktop is win10 already, but I have dipped my toe into the world of linux by installing Ubuntu on my laptop. So far I'm liking it. It's a ton easier that it used to be. I may have been put off by trying to get into it with earlier versions when you would have to know what you're doing to get basic hardware working, if it even worked with linux at all.

The speed of the progress in usability and features of FLOSS is quite surprising even for people like me that have been using it for over a decade. That's mostly due to at least two factors:

  • one is, obviously, that when you start from scratch, there' s a lot of room for improvement, and small things pile up very quickly to impressive changes;
  • the other is the positive feedback loop “better usability ⇒ more users ⇒ more developers ⇒ faster development ⇒ better usability”.

And of course as the user base expands hardware and software vendors are more pressed to look at the phenomenon as something bigger than just a hobbyist pastime, and their involvement does a lot, especially in terms of wider hardware support.

I have used Ubuntu in the past and still have it on my laptop. I just installed Linux mint on my desktop. I like it but have not gotten comfortable with it yet. MS has just gotten to Orwellian for me.

I'm running Elementary as a dual boot and as a separate machine. I've liked the idea of Linux for a long time but there usually something that puts me off. Here's the result of my current foray.

OK, Libre Office, great. Opera browser, all good - even got the R*ddit Enhancement Suite running. Thunderbird looks good but I haven't imported my mail yet. All this stuff works though the Software Centre so it's pretty much point and click.

Then I wanted to install Serviio, an excellent media server that I use to stream content to TV's around the house. It's great and they do a Linux version. What you get is a zip file and the instructions "just unpack it and run these two files" Oh and "here's a link to some Daemon instructions"

Daemons? Is this some Exorcist shit?

So at this point I think I've unpacked it to the wrong place. I may, or may not, be right in thinking I need to run Terminal for some command line stuff because suddenly it's 1990 again and... I booted back into Windows. Can I right click on the file and select run? Nope don't think so.

C'mon - I really don't want to have to think about command lines and switches. It's a GUI - give me a box with some boxes to tick and then you go off and do all that clever stuff. I suspect this is why Linux won't ever gain a bigger market share.

PS If it's 1990 remind me to buy some Apple shares!
